Conference and call back information

In January, there will be a virtual All-State Theater Conference consisting of online workshops, a virtual theatre department college fair (including an expected 12-15 colleges), and streaming versions of the Distinction performances.

Callbacks

Callbacks from individual college programs will be sent with the adjudication information and will occur during the college fair portion of the All-State Conference. Theatre Performance Auditions

Students interested in theatre performance categories will be required to complete the following audition process:

Musical Theater

Acapella auditions are strongly discouraged. You may record your audition using the Flipgrid platform or upload a previously recorded audition. (See Attached document Self Taping for the Actor.

Acting

One Monologue from a contemporary play totaling no more than 1 min. You may record your audition using the Flipgrid platform or upload a previously recorded audition. (See Attached document Self Taping for the Actor.

The Audition

Prepare your audition piece to fit the time limits allowed.

• No props are allowed. A chair may be used.

PLEASE DO NOT IDENTIFY YOUR SCHOOL DURING THE AUDITION EITHER VERBALLY OR WITH CLOTHING OR OTHER PERSONAL ITEMS.

Audition Tips & Things To Consider

• Audition with your strengths. If you are a strong comedic actor, choose a comedic monologue. If you are a strong character actor, choose an appropriate piece. If you are not a strong singer, it is better not to sing.

• Choose a character as near your age as possible and within your age range.

• Avoid unnecessary vulgarity. Adjudicators are rarely shocked, but they can be turned off. If your piece is selected for performance, we reserve the right to request that language or content be changed. If you choose not to change the material, you will still be recognized but not asked to perform.

• Memorize and rehearse your piece exactly as you intend to perform it INCLUDING YOUR NAME AND NUMBER. (Remember that your name and number at the beginning of your audition are a part of your time)

• If singing, get help picking a selection that shows your strengths. Perhaps choose the end of a song or a climactic vocal passage.

Design/Tech Interviews

Students interested in Technical theatre (Design/Technical Only OR Performance & Design/Tech) will be required to complete the following interview process:

1) Each applicant MUST participate in an interview via Zoom to determine his or her interests, commitment, habits, plans, ambitions, maturity, and general knowledge of theatre. Students will be asked about experiences and interest in all areas of Technical theatre ---including costuming, makeup, sound, lighting, scenery, properties, and all other aspects of stagecraft. The interview will last approximately five minutes. For the interview, a technical resume is required a digital technical portfolio and is recommended but not required and should be prepared to be viewed via screen share. In the absence of a portfolio, the student may bring any photographs, drawings, art work, craft work, cue scripts, shift schedules, and models etc. that they would like for adjudicators to see to be shown virtually via screen share. In evaluating applicants, a wide range of experiences and interests will be considered. The following website contains an article about building a technical portfolio: https://www.schooltheatre.org/HigherLogic/System/DownloadDocumentFile.ashx?DocumentFileKey=593a7d95-e8eb-4a1b-afd5-8375047e39a2
